Box Score ATLANTA (Sept. 21, 2013) – The Sewanee volleyball team earned its first Southern Athletic Association (SAA) win of the season Saturday, as the Tigers defeated Oglethorpe 3-2 inside Dorough Field House.
With the victory, Sewanee improved to 10-3 overall. After a loss at Berry Friday night, Sewanee also evened its league record to 1-1.
After OU won the first two sets, Sewanee rallied. The Tigers held on in the third set, but not without some late set magic.
Down to its final point, Lucy Riddle put down a kill to extend the match and set at 24-24. Berry would have another match point at 26-25, however Courtney Wienckowski fired her serve in the net.
After both teams traded points over the next two minutes, Sewanee finally closed out the third set with back-to-back kills from Diamond Stewart and Kayla Sewell.
With the momentum, Sewanee breezed past OU in the fourth set by a 25-15 score.
Then in the final set, Sewanee jumped out front early by taking a 5-1 lead. After OU battled back over the next nine points, the Tigers used an 8-3 run to close out the win.
Individually, Stewart led Sewanee with 11 kills on 37 total attacks. Junior setter Rachel Schuman also dished out 22 assists while libero Jamie Kosman finished with a team-high 24 digs.
Also defensively, Sewell had an unbelievable match with 11 block assists.
Sewanee will continue league play with a 5:30 p.m. (EST) match at rival Centre, Wednesday.
