Box Score SEWANEE, Tenn. (Jan. 25, 2013) – Despite a great effort, the Sewanee women's basketball team fell to Southern Athletic Association (SAA) rival Rhodes, 53-44, Friday night inside a packed Juhan Gymnasium.
Early on the Tigers played well. Sewanee jumped out to a 7-5 lead after Jamie Chauvin hit a jumper with less than five minutes off the clock.
As the half continued, the Tigers and the league-leading Lynx stayed close. A layup by Kayla Sewell briefly pulled Sewanee ahead, 20-18, with 5:55 until the break. However, that score would mark the final time the Tigers led.
From there, Rhodes closed the half on a 12-0 run. Despite the setback, Sewanee kept playing hard.
After back-to-back threes by Chauvin, the Tigers pulled to within six, 32-26, with 18:23 to play. However, a three by Sarah Johnson sparked a mini-run by Rhodes which pushed the Lynx advantage to 10, 41-31, with 8:14 to go.
Unfortunately, from there, every rally Sewanee had was matched by Rhodes.
Overall, Sewanee finished with its highest field-goal percentage since the January 4th contest at Birmingham-Southern.
Additionally, the Tigers held Rhodes guard Lauren Avant in-check. After averaging 23.1 ppg, Avant finished with only nine points.
For Sewanee, Chauvin led the offense with 15 points. Additionally, sophomore Kayla Sewell finished with her fifth double-double after she added 10 points and a game-high 13 rebounds.
Sewanee will quickly return to action when league member Hendrix travels to the Domain, Sunday. Tip-off is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
