Box Score 2 LEBANON, Tenn. (Sept. 1, 2012) – The Sewanee Tigers swept both matches today at the Cumberland Labor Day Volleydawg Classic including an impressive 3-0 straight set victory over NAIA host Cumberland University. The Tigers finished the tournament with a 3-1 record.
In the first match of the day, Sewanee got off to a slow start by dropping the first set 25-23. The Tigers roared back to take three consecutive sets (25-12, 25-15, 25-9) to capture the 3-1 decision.
Sophomore middle hitter Kayla Sewell led the Tigers with 15 kills, while Rachel Schuman contributed 30 assists and 13 digs. Newcomers Lucy Riddle with six service aces and Caroline Montgomery with seven block assists turned in stellar performances for the Tigers.
In their tournament finale the Tigers blasted Cumberland University 3-0 (25-19, 25-18, 25-23) to complete the sweep of the day's action.
Jamie Sue Wilson paced the Tigers with nine kills. Schuman had 28 assists and Jamie Kosman chipped in 15 digs. Sewell had two blocks and two block assists, while Wilson and Maggie Stanford turned in three service aces.
"I am extremely pleased with the way our team performed today!" stated a very happy Coach Shawna Laurendine. "We started slow against Pikeville and allowed them to take a set off us, but came together during the second set and we were able to control the rest of the match. We grew as a team against Cumberland! We played disciplined, and with great effort to control the match. It was great to see the determination we had to defeat them. It was nice to hear an official say we look the best she has seen this program look in the past 25 years!"
Today's wins improved the Tigers to 3-1 on the young season.
Sewanee will return to action on Thursday, September 6 with a match at Covenant College.
