Sewanee slams LaGrange, 77-64

SEWANEE, Tenn. (Feb. 1, 2012) – Behind a strong second half surge, the Sewanee men's basketball team defeated LaGrange College, 77-64, Wednesday evening inside Juhan Gymnasium.
 
With the win, the Tigers improved their overall record to 11-8. Sewanee has also won nine of its 10 home contests this season.
 
In the first half, Sewanee jumped out front early. Up three, 14-11, the Tigers used a seven-point run to extend its advantage by 10, with 10:25 remaining. LaGrange then went on a spurt of its own, when Danzel Robinson's free throw tied the score with 3:05 left.
 
However, the Tigers immediately responded with a 7-0 run, capped off by a Brett Bouldin three at the buzzer.
 
With a seven-point lead at the half, Sewanee came out of its locker room hot. The Tigers hit their first six attempts, which built a 15-point advantage, 55-40. Over the next 10 minutes, the Sewanee offense continued to roll. The Tigers led, 73-51, when senior Sam Martin slammed home any chance of a LaGrange comeback with an impressive dunk.
 
After shooting poorly at Austin College, the Tigers rebounded with a season-high 30-of-58 effort from the floor (51.7 percent). Sewanee also made a season-high 10-of-19 three-point attempts, to go along with 42 rebounds.
 
Individually, sophomore Valentino Bryant led four Tigers in double figures with 16 points. The second-year point guard also led the Tigers with seven rebounds, and a season-high seven assists.
 
Junior Tyler Brown and sophomore Anvil Nelson each pitched in 12 points while sophomore Bryan Beviacqua added 10 points on a perfect 3-of-3 shooting.
 
Forward Marcus Vaughn led the Panthers with 17 points and nine boards. Guards Aaron Power and Kyron Anderson were the only other LaGrange players in double figures with 14 and 11 points, respectively.
 
Sewanee will look to keep its momentum going, when the Tigers travel to Centre College, Saturday. Tipoff is set for 3:00 p.m.
