Box Score SEWANEE, Tenn. (Dec. 1, 2012) – A late jump shot by Maggie Hartlage lifted Southern Athletic Association (SAA) rival Centre past the Sewanee women's basketball team, 42-41, Saturday afternoon inside Juhan Gymnasium.
The Tigers (2-2, 0-1 SAA) briefly had a late lead with 1:25 left, when Paige Lowe made a jumper. However, a missed free throw and a turnover down the stretch hampered the Tigers' ability to tie or take the lead for good.
Early on, Centre came out strong. The Colonels build a 10-0 lead before forward Kayla Sewell finally stopped the run with a jump shot with 11:07 left in the first half.
Throughout the remainder of the half, Sewanee chipped away its deficit. A pair of free throws and a jumper by Sewell cut the Colonel lead to five, 20-15, with 2:56 left. The Tigers then pulled to within one at halftime after McKenzie Jones hit two more free throws and Haley McDonough finished off a layup.
In the second half the Tigers took their first lead, when Sewell's layup gave Sewanee a one-point advantage, 21-20, right out of the locker room.
The Tigers would eventually extend their lead to five points twice in the second half, when Lowe and Clarissa Medley made threes.
Down 35-30 with 11:08 to play, Centre started its comeback. Over the next seven minutes, baskets by Bridget Winstead, Alanna Guy, Chelsea Benham, and Paige Beachle capped a 9-3 Centre run.
That offensive burst set up the final plays down the stretch.
Overall, the Tigers almost overcame a season-low field goal percentage of 33.3 percent. Despite the tough shooting, Sewanee's defense held Centre to a 37.2 field-goal percentage and 19 turnovers.
Individually, Lowe led all players with a game-high 15 points. Sewell pitched in 12 points on a perfect 5-of-5 shooting.
The Tigers return to action with a 6:00 p.m., contest Tuesday at regional-rival Covenant.
