CONWAY, Ark. (Jan. 13, 2012) – The Sewanee men's basketball team used four player in double figures to pull away from Hendrix, 71-57, Friday night, inside Grove Gymnasium.
With the win, the Tigers are now 8-5 overall and 3-3 in SCAC play. After starting the conference season 0-2, Sewanee has won three out of its last four league games. The only conference loss, during that stretch, came against No. 16 Birmingham-Southern.
After an early Hendrix run, Sewanee fought back throughout the first half. The Warriors led 21-19, when junior guard
Lewis Affronti connected on his first three after a steal by sophomore
Bryan Beviacqua.
Two possessions later, Affronti pushed the Tiger advantage to four, 25-21, with his second straight three pointer. Sewanee eventually took a five point lead into the intermission, after the Tigers held Hendrix scoreless the final seven minutes.
In the second half, Sewanee led by as much as 12, 47-35, when junior guard
Brett Bouldin hit another three with 11:16 left.
However, Hendrix responded with a 11-0 run over the next three minutes to pull within one. After a Sewanee timeout, senior
Trent Williams got the Tigers back on track when his three built the lead to four, 50-46, with 6:35 remaining.
From there, Sewanee never looked back. The Tigers closed the game on a 21-11 run to slowly pull away.
As a team, the Tigers shot a season-high 60 percent from beyond the arc. Additionally, Sewanee outrebounded Hendrix by nine which helped the Tigers score 14 second chance points.
Individually, sophomore
Valentino Bryant added 14 points while teammates
Tyler Brown and Affronti each pitched in 13. After going 4-for-5 from the floor, Bouldin finished the night with 11 points.
The Warriors were led by Jaren Riley who finished with a game-high 17 points.
The Tigers continue their two-game road trip with a 3:00 p.m. contest Sunday against Colorado College in Colorado Springs, Colorado.
