Box Score
Box Score: Seawnee vs. Piedmont

SEWANEE, Tenn. (Sept. 25, 2011)
Led by senior forward Matt Lightfoot the Sewanee men's soccer team extended its six match unbeaten streak with a 4-2 win over Piedmont Sunday afternoon at Puett Field.

With the win the Tigers now sit with a 5-1-1 record, while Piedmont fell to a 2-5 mark.

"Today we needed to put together a strong effort to match a difficult opponent," said head coach David Poggi. "Defensively we worked very hard today and I was proud on how we protected the ball and created chances in the counter attack."

After posting four points (one goal, two assists) during Friday's victory Lightfoot continued where he left off, as the Germantown, Tennessee native fired home two goals and one assist against Piedmont.

Late in the first half Sewanee continued to pressure the Piedmont back line as the clock ticked under a minute. After junior Devon Ball crossed a ball into the box, Lightfoot was there to tap home the opening goal with seven seconds left in the half.

After both teams traded possession through the first 21 minutes of the second half, forward Watson Hartsoe pushed the Tiger lead to 2-0 after he connected on a ball from Sam Edoung-Biyo.

As play continued Ball fired home his first goal of the contest – giving Sewanee a 3-0 lead – after Lightfoot's shot deflected back the junior.

Despite being out possessed most of the game Piedmont didn't quit as Vincent Thomas and Sidney Smith made things interesting with three minutes remaining after the pair of Lion attackers fired home back-to-back goals in a two minutes span.

Fortunately, for the Tigers Lightfoot responded again as the Sewanee captain found the back of the net from teammate Brian Maloney in final minute of play.

"At the end we got a little tired and forgot what got us there," said Poggi. "You can never underestimate an opponents ability; when you do, even if it is just for one or two plays things can get difficult. We can certainly take something away from this weekend and continue to build on the experience as we head into the conference part of our schedule."

As a team Sewanee posted 25 shots on the day, with 14 coming on goal. Lightfoot led the attack with his offense performance, with Ball adding three points on the day.

The Tigers will return to action with their first SCAC match of the season as Southwestern comes to the Mountain for a 7:00 pm contest September 30.
