Sewanee, Tenn.- The \#18 Sewanee women's tennis team upset \#13 Washington University-St. Louis Friday afternoon to advance to the third round of the NCAA Division III Tournament. Despite being forced to delay doubles and move inside due to rain, the Tigers won three thrilling doubles matches in front of a lively home crowd before taking home a 5-0 win.
For the second day in a row, the Sewanee \#3 doubles team of Lindsay Wilburn and Laura Szyperski earned the first point for the Tiger team. The twosome picked up an 8-4 win over Washington's Paige Madara and Connie Rauck, while the \#1 doubles team of Kate Stanford and Jenny Liles battled to an 8-6 win over Washington's Natalie Tingir and Evelyn Qin.
The \#2 doubles team of Michelle Flume and Anne Garland were the final duo on the courts. The twosome found themselves locked in a dogfight with the Bears' pairing of Theresa Petraskova and Elise Sambol that dragged on into a second hour of play. The Bears jumped out to a 4-2 lead in the set before Garland and Flume clawed their way back to take a 7-6 lead. The two teams were eventually forced into a tiebreaker and the Tigers eventually won the point, earning a 9-8 (7-4) victory over the visitors.
With the momentum and the crowd pushing them into singles play, the Tigers put the \#1-\#3 players on the court with the hopes of determining the match. Stanford squared off with Tingir at \#1 singles, while Liles faced Qin at the \#2 spot and Flume took on Kate Klein at \#3 singles.
Liles was the first off the court after grabbing a 6-2, 6-0 victory over Qin, giving the Tigers a 4-0 edge. Stanford ended up being the clincher for Sewanee after she pulled off a 7-6 (2), 6-2 win over Tingir. With Liles' and Stanford's singles wins, the Tigers earned a 5-0 victory and advanced to the third round of tournament play.
Sewanee improves to 21-6 on the year, while Washington closes out the season with a 16-6 overall record. The Tigers will now face the winner of the Agnes Scott/Emory contest at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday in third round action. The winner of that match will advance to the NCAA Quarterfinals to be held in Claremont, California.
