The \#19 and second-seeded Sewanee women's tennis team opened up the 2011 SCAC Tennis Championships with a 9-0 blanking of the Southwestern Pirates Friday. The Tigers ran through all three doubles matches, allowing the Pirates just three sets, before sweeping all six singles matches.
Sewanee freshman Kate Stanford and sophomore Jenny Liles teamed up at \#1 doubles to take out Southwestern's Jessica Gaines and Elyse Bigler, 8-1. Michelle Flume and Anne Garland paired up to take out Lali Satyvada Victoria DeLeon, 8-0, at the \#2 spot, while Lindsay Wilburn and Laura Szyperski earned an 8-2 win over the Southwestern pairing of Fitzsimmons and Blake at \#3 doubles.
Stanford earned a 6-4, 6-0 win at \#1 singles over DeLeon, before Liles picked up a 6-0, 6-4 victory over Bigler at the \#2 spot. Flume defeated Gaines, 7-5, 6-1, at \#3 singles, while Garland was a 6-0, 6-0 winner over Blake at the four spot. Sewanee's Julia Wood took out Southwestern's Satyvada, 6-3, 6-1, at \#5 singles and Wilburn finished out the Tiger sweep with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Fitzsimmons at the six spot.
The win pushes the Tigers season record to 18-5 overall. Sewanee will continue play in the SCAC Championships with a Saturday match up with \#25 and third-seeded Trinity University.
