Tigers remain perfect after downing Biola University

The Sewanee women's tennis team remained perfect on the season after downing Biola University, 7-2, in La Mirada, California Friday afternoon. The Tigers picked up wins in two of the three doubles' slots before winning five of the six singles' matches to move to 7-0 on the season.

 

The undefeated \#1 doubles pairing of Jenny Liles (Little Rock, Ark., Mount St. Mary) and Kate Stanford (Mountain Brook, Ala., Mountain Brook) teamed up once again Friday and were able to easily dispose of Biola's \#1 pairing. Stanford and Liles topped the Eagles' Mariah Pace and Kristen Williams, 8-1. The Tigers also got a point at \#2 doubles when Laura Szyperski (Atlanta, Ga., Lovett) and Lindsay Wilburn (Hilton Head, S.C., Hilton Head Christian) paired up to take down Biola's Kia Choi and Kelly Thompson, 8-6.

 

Biola got their first point of the contest when their \#3 doubles team got the best of the Tigers. Danielle Calbeck and Alisha Hansen topped the Sewanee pairing of Elizabeth Lee (Decatur, Ga., Woodward Academy)and Mary Catherine Horne (Columbia, S.C., AC Flora), 8-5.

 

Sewanee nearly swept the singles' matches, winning the \#1-\#5 match ups before the Tigers' \#6 player was forced to retire due to injury. Anne Garland (Richmond, Va., St. Catherine's ) took the \#1 spot for the Tigers against the Eagles and brought home a point after topping Choi, 6-3, 6-4. Julia Wood (Tulsa, Okla., Union) won at \#2 singles, defeating Pace, 6-5, 6-2. Derry Roberson (San Ignacio, Belize, St. Stephen's Episcopal) also picked up a win for Sewanee, grabbing the \#3 point away from Biola's Kristen Williams, 6-1, 6-1.

 

Sewanee's Meredith Lawrence (Nashville, Tenn., Harpeth Hall) picked up a win at \#4 singles, downing Biola's Shelby Smith, 6-2, 6-1, before Kathleen Catherall (Nashville, Tenn., Harpeth Hall) got a point in the \#5 slot when she beat Biola's Angelen Cobian, 6-0, 6-1. Biola picked up a point at \#6 singles after Sewanee's Horne fell behind 6-2, 2-0 before being forced to retire.

 

The Tigers will be back in action on Saturday as they take on a doubleheader day. Sewanee will square off against Whittier at 9:00 a.m. before taking on Laverne University at 2:00 p.m.
