The Sewanee women's tennis team pushed their season record to 3-0 after an 8-1 win over Martin Methodist College Saturday afternoon. The Tigers got wins at five of the six singles positions and swept the three doubles matches.
Sewanee started off this morning with three wins on the doubles courts. The \#2 doubles pair of Anne Garland (Richmond, Va., St. Catherine's ) and Michelle Flume (San Antonio, Tex., St. Mary's Hall) were the first duo off the court with a win after dropping the Long/Stanford pairing of the Redhawks, 8-2. Sewanee's \#3 doubles team of Lindsay Wilburn (Hilton Head, S.C., Hilton Head Christian) and Laura Szyperski (Atlanta, Ga., Lovett) followed with an 8-3 win over Martin's Maria Charrys and Rachel Wolfe.
The Tigers' \#1 doubles team of Kate Stanford (Mountain Brook, Ala., Mountain Brook) and Jenny Liles (Little Rock, Ark., Mount St. Mary) were the final pair standing during the doubles competition, after going down to the wire with Paloma Cortina and Anastasia Aleshcheva. Stanford and Liles managed to outlast the Redhawks' pair and take home a 9-7 victory.
After the doubles sweep, Sewanee picked up wins in five of the six singles' slots. Stanford won at \#1 singles after a 6-1, 6-2 dual, while Liles won at \#2 singles, 6-3, 6-3. Flume got a win at \#3 singles, topping Charrys 7-6, 6-0 before Garland dropped a 6-4, 7-5 decision at \#4 singles.
Wilburn blanked Jeana Stanford at \#5 singles, winning 6-0, 6-0, while Mary Taylor Tepper (Richmond, Va., The Steward School) rounded out the Tigers' attack with a 6-3, 6-1 win at \#6 singles.
With the win, Sewanee improves to 3-0. They are off until March 5th, when they will play host to Huntingdon College at 9:00 a.m.
