Holly Springs, Miss. 10/18/11 – The Sewanee Tigers defeated Rust College and Division II Lane College by identical 3-0 scores in volleyball play today in Holly Springs, Mississippi.
With the pair of wins the Tigers up their record to 6-17 overall.
In the first match of the afternoon Sewanee outlasted Rust by set scores of 25-19, 25-19 and 25-18.
Freshman
Kayla Sewell led the way for the Tigers with 14 kills, while posting a hitting percentage of .394.
Rachel Schuman contributed 31 assists and
Erin Brahm had 18 digs. Callie Simms led the way with three service aces. Sewell turned in five blocks.
In their second match the Tigers routed Lane College by scores of 25-13, 25-10 and 25-9.
Jamie Sue Wilson paced Sewanee with 13 kills. Sewell again led in hitting percentage with eight kills and zero errors on 14 attempts for a .571 hitting percentage.
Rachel Schuman had 17 assists while Sewell led with 14 digs. Brahm and Sewell each had five service aces and Sims and
Kim Conkell had one block apiece.
Sewanee will close out regular season SCAC action this weekend when they travel to Oglethorpe University in Atlanta, Ga. to take on Oglethorpe and Birmingham Southern College on Saturday and Centre College on Sunday.
Milestones:
Jamie Sue Wilson passed a perfect 3.0 on serve receive vs. Lane, the only perfect passing score of the season
After the match vs. Rust,
Kayla Sewell moved up to second place in the record books for blocks in a season. She is now at 77, four away from surpassing the record of 80 set in 2002.
