Tigers head to Texas for SCAC showdown with Austin College

The Sewanee men's and women's basketball teams head to Sherman, Texas this weekend for a Friday showdown with the 'Roos of Austin College. The women are still looking for their first conference win and will look to do so against an Austin team that is 5-9 on the season, while the men look to make it two in a row after their lop-sided win over Southwestern on Saturday.

 

Dickie McCarthy's Tigers, which are 2-12 overall and 0-7 in SCAC play, will face off against first-year head coach Michelle Filander's Kangaroos. The 'Roos are 5-9 overall and 3-4 in SCAC play after a 70-48 win over Rhodes College on Sunday. Sewanee is coming off a 90-54 defeat at the hands of the Southwestern University.

 

Dani Kabbes (Chesterfield, Mo., Villa Duchesne) leads the Tigers, averaging 16.4 points and 8.7 rebounds per game. Logan Miller (Franklin, Tenn., Christ Presbyterian) adds 11.6 points a night, while Claire Elliott (Louisville, Ky, Assumption) chips in 10.4 points and 3.4 assists per game. The Tigers, who lead the nation in 3-point field goals made per game, are shooting 32.4% from the field on the season.

 

The Kangaroos are led by Kersti Marusich, who is averaging 13.6 points per game. Shayne Clardy adds 9.7 points a night, while collecting 4.7 rebounds. Brooke Melton leads Austin on the boards, grabbing 6.6 rebounds a night. The 'Roos picked up their first win in four tries when they defeated Rhodes last weekend. Austin has also picked up conference wins over Hendrix and Trinity this season.

 

On the men's side, Sewanee snapped a three-game losing streak on Saturday, topping Southwestern 91-52, in their most lop-sided game in ten years. The Tigers moved to 6-8 overall and 2-5 in SCAC play with the win. The Kangaroos are 8-7 on the year and 4-3 in conference play after a 73-45 win over Rhodes College on Sunday.

 

Sewanee is paced by freshman Valentino Bryant (Hendersonville, Tenn., Beech), who scored 19 points in the Tigers win over Southwestern and is averaging 11.1 points and 3.1 assists per game. Anvil Nelson (Brentwood, Tenn., Brentwood) is second in scoring and first in rebounding for the Tigers, averaging 10.4 points and 5.9 rebounds a game for Sewanee. Lewis Affronti (Virginia Beach, Va., Norfolk Academy) chips in 7.9 points a night.

 

Austin is led by Jordan Hancock, who drops in 15.1 points and 2.9 assists per game, while Josh Saunders adds 13.3 points a night. Walter Phillips is averaging 12.9 points and Scott Straley is the fourth Kangaroo averaging double-digits, bringing home 11.3 points per game. Saunders leads the 'Roos with 6.7 rebounds per game, while Straley grabs 6.3 boards a night.
