The Sewanee men's and women's basketball teams split their cross-state SCAC rivalry contests with the Lynx of Rhodes College on Sunday afternoon. The women fell 83-66 despite double-digit scoring efforts from three different Tigers, while the men claimed a thrilling 65-63 victory after freshman Valentino Bryant nailed a half court shot with just 0.4 seconds left to play.
The lady Tigers got 24 points from Logan Miller and a double-double, 17 points and 10 rebounds, from Dani Kabbes in the effort. Paige Lowe also added 14 points in the contest. With the loss, the women fall to 2-8 on the season and 0-3 in conference play.
The men held a 40-29 halftime lead but the host Lynx were able to claw their way back throughout the second half. After an eight-minute Tiger dry spell, Rhodes took their first lead late in the second half, 51-50. A back and forth contest from then on out, the Tigers found themselves up 62-61 with just 3.0 seconds left. Rhodes' Andrew Galow knocked down a lay up to give the Lynx a 63-62 lead with just 0.4 seconds left. Sewanee's Sam Martin found Bryant on the inbounds pass and Bryant knocked down a half court buzzer beater to give Sewanee the 65-63 victory.
The win moves the men to 5-5 overall and 1-2 in the SCAC.
