Sewanee hosts second SCAC doubleheader of the weekend Saturday

The Sewanee men's and women's basketball teams will play host to their second SCAC doubleheader of the weekend on Saturday when the Pirates of Southwestern University come to town. The women will tip off at 6 p.m. followed by the men at 8 p.m.

 

The Lady Tigers are still searching for their first conference win of the season and will look to do so against the 11-4 Pirates. Sewanee is 2-11 on the year and 0-6 in SCAC play. The Tigers dropped an 82-55 loss to Trinity on Friday night. Logan Miller (Franklin, Tenn., Christ Presbyterian) led all scorers in that contest with 13 points. Southwestern is 3-3 in conference play after falling to Oglethorpe, 77-75, on Friday. The Pirates topped Trinity, 65-43, earlier in the year and have also earned conference wins over Austin and Millsaps.

Dani Kabbes (Chesterfield, Mo., Villa Duchesne) leads the Tigers in scoring with 17.6 points and 9.0 rebounds per game. Miller and Claire Elliott (Louisville, Ky, Assumption) also average double-figure scoring outputs, chipping in 11.5 and 10.6 a night, respectively. Elliott also adds 4.0 rebounds and 3.5 assists a contest. The Tigers, who lead Division III in 3-pointers made per contest, continued their hot-shooting from beyond the arc in Friday's contest, nailing 11 treys in the loss to Trinity. As a team, Sewanee is shooting 33% from the field, while their opponents have averaged a 46% clip from the field. The Tigers lead the conference in steals per game, swiping their opponents 11.4 times a game.

 

The Pirates feature four players averaging in double-figures. Chelsea Leeder leads the way with 13.9 points per game while Shae Seagraves is second with 13.4 points a night. Anna Fareed adds 13.1 a game and Staley Mullins chips in 10.9 points per game. Mullins paves the way with 7.6 rebounds per contest, as Leeder pulls down 7.2 boards a night. The Pirates rank second in the conference in field goal percentage and average 70.4 points per contest.

 

On the men's side, Sewanee looks to rebound from three straight losses. The Tigers are 5-8 overall and 1-5 in SCAC play after their 58-40 loss to Trinity on Friday night.  Southwestern is 4-11 on the season and 2-4 in the conference. They fell 83-59 to Oglethorpe on Friday night. Nick Caputo led the Pirates with 16 points in the loss.

 

Freshman Valentino Bryant (Hendersonville, Tenn., Beech) leads Sewanee, averaging 10.5 points per game. Fellow freshman Anvil Nelson (Brentwood, Tenn., Brentwood) adds 10.0 points a night while leading the Tigers with 5.8 rebounds per game. Sewanee knocks down seven 3-pointers per game, the second best average in the SCAC. As a team, the Tigers are shooting 39% from the field and nearly 32% from beyond the 3-point line.

 

The Pirates are led by two players who rank in the top-five in the SCAC in scoring average. Logan Hurley is second in the conference and leads Southwestern with 17.5 points per game, while Caputo is fourth with 15.9 points a night. Jonathan Brown and Robbie Hanley each contribute double-figures, scoring 12.4 and 10.6 points per game, respectively. Hanley leads the Pirates with 5.9 rebounds a contest. The Pirates lead the conference in free throws made per game (17.4), as well as defensive rebounds (26.9), but turn the ball over more times than anyone else (20.5 per game).
