Sewanee Women�s Soccer Shuts Out Covenant; Johnston Gets First Win

SEWANEE, Tenn. – Sewanee opened it's 2009 women's soccer season Tuesday night and shut out visiting Covenant College 2-0. The Tigers notched both goals in the first half and then held firm in the second for the shutout. New head coach Patrick Johnston earned his first win at the helm of Sewanee's program.

 


 

Sewanee sophomore Virginia Zakas (Atlanta, Ga., Westminster) scored the first Tiger goal unassisted in the eighth minute and Kabler Colhoun (Winston-Salem, N.C., Mount Taber) added some insurance in the 40th minute with the second Tiger goal. Britt Williams (Birmingham, Ala., Altamont) earned the shutout for Sewanee in goal and had five saves. Bethany Holman grabbed five saves in goal for the Scots. The Tigers outshot the Scots 18-5.

 

Sewanee is now 1-0 and will play Berry and Mississippi College at the Birmingham-Southern Invitational this weekend before playing at Christian Brothers on September 20. The next home action for the Tigers will be SCAC matches against DePauw and Centre September 25-27. Covenant is now 2-1 and will play Milligan this weekend.
