BOX SCORE
SEWANEE, Tenn. – Sewanee hosted SCAC and in-state rival
Rhodes on Sunday for senior day and the Tiger seniors stepped it up
in a big way, scoring all but seven of Sewanee's points in
the 74-70 Sewanee win. After leading 32-27 at the half, Sewanee led
by as much as 18 in the second before a Rhodes rally brought the
Lynx to within two points. After a back and forth struggle late, a
pair of Bradley Pierson (Rome, Ga., Darlington) free
throws secured the 74-70 final score. Sewanee now holds a
three-game win streak and swept its first home SCAC weekend since
February of 2005.
"This weekend was a great weekend for our team and Seniors," said
Sewanee coach Bubba Smith. "Any time you can close out a weekend
with a win over your rival, it's exciting. I was proud of the
leadership our Seniors showed and their ability to stage off Rhodes
late game rally. It was nice to finish off today's game at
the line, which has been a thorn in our side this year. Our
guys are really believing right now. We hope we can continue
to improve over the next two weeks and make a run in Conway."
Senior Ben Pursell (Franklin, Tenn., BGA) led
Sewanee's effort with 22 points and seven rebounds. He was
12-13 from the free throw line. Senior Kenton Coleman
(Ridgetop, Tenn., Greenbrier) logged 15 points and also had
seven rebounds. Pierson and Fellow senior Casey Berry (Naples,
Fla., Community School) were also in double digits with 12
and 10 points. Berry also had three steals. Sewanee senior
Eric Schneider (Winter Park, Fla., Trinity Prep) also
chipped in eight points in the Tiger winning effort. Cory Smith and
Nathan Ollie led Rhodes' effort with performances of 25 and
23 points.
Sewanee was 43% accurate from the field and Rhodes hit 44% of its
field goals. Sewanee out-rebounded Rhodes 35-31 and was 22-23 from
the free throw line. Sewanee is now 7-16 and is 4-8 in the league.
The Tigers will play at Centre and DePauw next weekend before
traveling to Arkansas in two weeks for the SCAC Tournament.
