SEWANEE, Tenn. – Sewanee wrapped up the 2009 Lon Varnell Classic Sunday and after getting out to an 11-4 lead early, fell to the visiting Hawks 70-56. Huntingdon overcame Sewanee's early lead with three minutes to play in the first half and never looked back, getting the eventual 14-point win.
Garrett Hollingsworth (Roanoke, Va., North Cross) led Sewanee with 14 points, while Tony Marelle (Atlanta, Ga., Mt. Pisgah) added 11 for the Tigers. Marelle was also named All-Tournament for the weekend with 21 total points and an 11-4 assist-turnover ratio. Leon Frazier, Jr. led Huntingdon with 19 points. Huntingdon made 43% of its field goals, while Sewanee was 32% good from the line. Huntingdon also had a 43-34 edge in rebounds.
Sewanee is now 3-6 so far and will return to action January 1 against Rhodes in SCAC action. Huntingdon is 3-5.
