DANVILLE, Ky. – Sewanee wrapped up a weekend of SCAC play on Sunday in Danville and fell 3-1 to the host Centre Colonels. Centre led 1-0 at halftime and then upped its lead to two goals late in the second.
Sewanee newcomer Matt Lightfoot (Germantown, Tenn.) started a rally for the Tigers in the 80th minute of play on a direct kick, but Centre's Ben Ven Nevel squelched the rally late to secure Centre's final total of three. "Lightfoot's free kick goal was a beauty and brought us to 2-1. We pushed to get the equalizer and outside of Centre's longthrow, we were the more dangerous on the day," said Sewanee coach David Poggi.
Senior keeper Johnny Nalley (Gainsville, Ga.) had five saves in goal for Sewanee, while Aaron Arndt logged three for the Colonels. The Colonels also outshot the Tigers 16-5. They committed 15 fouls, while Sewanee only had five.
Sewanee falls to 3-5 in 2008 and is 0-2 in the SCAC. Centre is 7-2 so far and picked up conference wins versus Oglethorpe and Sewanee this weekend.
"I am very pleased with how we played this weekend. The effort has been consistent all season, today we played with confidence and desire as well", concluded Coach Poggi.
