Converting the athletic facilities of Shaffer Gymnasium and the Ormond Simkins Fieldhouse, Juhan Gymasium was bulit in the 1950s and opened on June 8, 1957. Named for Bishop Frank Juhan C'1911, an inductee of the National Football Hall of Fame (1966), the Tennessee Sports Hall of Fame (1966) and the Sewanee Athletics Hall of Fame (2004), Juhan was named an All-American by Walter Camp in 1909.Â
The 1957 facility saw a new basketball court and a swimming pool. In 1964, the Charlotte Guerry Tennis Courts were added to honor the widow of Vice-Chancellor Alexander Guerry.Â
Renovated in 1994 as a part of the new Fowler Center, the facility hosted the first-ever NCAA Division III Men's Championship in 1997. Hosting the first and second rounds, the University of the South welcomed Rust College (Miss.), Bridgewater College (Va.) and Maryville College (Tenn.). Sewanee earned its first-ever NCAA Tournament win in the opening round with a 68-61 victory of the Bearcasts of Rust.Â
In 2023, the men's team also hosted the program's first-ever Southern Athletic Association (SAA) Tournament game in program history, defeating Oglethorpe University (Ga.), 87-74.Â
Recent changes to Juhan Gymnasium include updated bench chairs and the Kim Valek C'87 Scorer's Table. Valek was Sewanee's first female All-American, holding the school record for points in a career (1,777), and was a part of the inaugural class of the Sewanee Athletics Hall of Fame in 2004.Â
