Devon Serrano

Devon Serrano begins her first year as the Director of Sports Medicine at Sewanee in 2024-25, covering all 24 varsity sports for the Tigers.

Serrano spent the last eight years as the Director of Sports Medicine at Sweet Briar College in Sweet Briar, Va. She was responsible for 10 NCAA varsity teams and competitive equestrian programs.

While at Sweet Briar, Serrano published the first return-to-ride concussion management protocol for equestrian athletes and is working on implementing it at other NCAA institutions. She is a Red Cross certified instructor for first aid, CPR, AED and lifeguarding. Serrano is educated in various aspects of manual therapy including Maitland, Muscle Energy, Mulligan's and Mobilization with Movement. She is also a Graston and Myofascial Decompression provider. 

In addition to her clinical responsibilities at Sweet Briar, Serrano served as the Athletic Department's Title IX Educator and Representative. In 2022, she was the Virginia College/University Athletic Trainer of the Year and the NATA Intercollegiate Council for Sports Medicine "New Horizon" Award Recipient. 

Prior to Sweet Briar, Serrano worked through Auburn University as a fellow of the Warrior Athletic Training Program at Fort Benning in Columbus, Ga. She served as the athletic trainer for soldiers in basic training for the United States Army in the 1st Battalion, 50th Infantry Regiment. Before Fort Benning, she worked as a contract athletic trainer at the University of Louisiana-Lafayette with the women's volleyball team and assisting with football, softball and women's basketball for the Ragin' Cajuns. 

Serrano graduated from SUNY Cortland in 2012 with a bachelor's in Kinesiology with a concentration in Exercise Science. She earned a master's in Clinical Athletic Training from Bloomsburg University in 2014, completing two rotations with Bucknell University's men's lacrosse and football programs. In 2017, Serrano received her Doctorate in Athletic Training from Indiana State University as a member of the inaugural cohort for the only CAATE-accredited doctoral program in the country.
