SEWANEE, Tenn. – Sewanee's men's tennis team opened conference play on Saturday morning and faced Piedmont, collecting the win.
Against Rhodes, the Tigers swept the doubles matches, coming away with the doubles point. Jordan Theron cruised at one with a 6-1, 6-4 win and Ben Lammert picked up the point at three, 6-3, 6-0. Max Verellen clinched the match for the Tigers with a win at five, 6-3, 6-4. The Lynx collected their lone point with a win at two singles, but Talman Ramsey collected a 6-3, 6-3 win at four before Drew Rukavina collected the point at six. Rukavina was up 7-5, 4-1 when his opponent retired
The Tigers swept Piedmont during their second match of the day. Sewanee's two doubles of Gil Weston and Talman Ramsey won 6-4 and the three doubles team of Andre-Remi Jakobi and Ben Lammert won at three, 6-3 clinched the doubles point. Theron and Quinn Wicklund won at one doubles in a tie breaker, 8-6, completing the sweep.
In singles, Ramsey and Verellen collected quick wins at four and five respectively, Ramsey picking up a 6-1, 6-1 win and Verellen a 6-0, 6-2 result. Lammert then clinched the match for Sewanee with an 6-0, 6-2 win at two.
George Thomas Alexander won at six, 7-5, 6-2 and Wicklund followed at three, 6-4, 6-4. Jakobi closed out the sweep with a 6-3, 6-0 win at one.
The Tigers resume conference play against Hendrix on Sunday at 9 a.m.
