Men’s Tennis Splits Doubleheader in California

SEWANEE, Tenn. – Sewanee's men's tennis team played a doubleheader on Monday in California as they swept UC Santa Cruz to start the day, 4-0, but fell to No. 24 ranked Pomona-Pitzer in the second match of the day.

Against UC Santa Cruz, the Tigers swept the doubles point as all teams dropped just two games. Jordan Theron and Quinn Wicklund defeated Andrew Tjoa and Adam Hidas at one, Ben Lammert and Andre-Remi Jakobi won at two, and Gil Weston and Talman Ramsey won at three. 

Theron rolled into singles with a 6-2, 6-3 win at one and Quinn Wicklund at also won in straight sets at two, 6-2, 7-6, winning the second set tiebreaker, 9-7. Talman Ramey clinched the match for Sewanee, taking the first set, 6-1, lost the second 6-4, but took the third 7-5. 

Lammert, Jakobi, and Henry Hyden were all in the third set. Jakobi lost the first at three singles, 5-7, but took the second set, 6-4. Lammert took the first in a first-set tiebreaker, 7-4, before dropping the second 6-4, and was up 2-1 in the third. Hyden dropped the first at six, 2-6, but took the second 6-3 and was at 5 all in the third when the match was clinched. 

Pomona-Pitzer won two doubles matches in a tiebreaker, taking the doubles point to start the day. 

The Sage Hens kept the momentum rolling as they picked up two more singles points in straight sets, at lines one and six. Ben Lammert, at four singles, picked up Sewanee's lone point of the match with a 6-1, 6-7 (0), 6-2 win. Wicklund battled back from losing the first set 6-1, taking the second set 7-5, but fell 3-6 in the final set. Jakobi also dropped a third set thriller in a match tiebreaker, 6-4, 2-6, 6-7 (3). Ramsey was still battling when the match was clinched, 6-4, 6-7 (6), 0-1, leaving the match at five singles unfinished. 

The Tigers will head to Chapman in Orange, Calif. To face the No. 32 ranked Panthers at 7 PM CT (5 PM PT).
