Tigers collect season opener win against No. 5 Tennessee Wesleyan

SEWANEE, Tenn. – Sarah Livingston clinched the Tigers' home opener against Tennessee Wesleyan on Wednesday night in women's tennis action. Sewanee picked up the win against the #5 ranked team in the NAIA, 5-4 in the Charlotte Guerry Indoor Courts on Wednesday, Feb. 7.

The Tigers got off to a 2-1 lead after doubles play. Brooke Despriet and Katherine Petty, #3 in the national doubles rankings, took down their opponents in convincing fashion, 8-2, at the top spot.

At #2 doubles, Nicole Nowak and Sarah Livingston picked up the second doubles point with another dominating 8-4. 

The Tennessee Wesleyan Bulldogs got their lone doubles win beating Sewanee's Ansley Carpenter and Ivy Wilson, 8-4. 

Entering singles play, Katherine Petty finished off her opponent, 6-4, 6-4, in dominating fashion, much like her doubles match earlier in the day. At line three, Ansley Carpenter collected the Tigers' fourth win of the day with a 6-1, 7-6 (3). 

Brooke Despriet played a tight three-set match at the number one spot, losing the first set by a break, 4-6. She fought back in the second set, flipping the scoreboard and winning 6-4. Ultimately, Despriet lost the third set, 3-6, to Wesleyan's Alcala.

Sarah Livingston clinched the match for Sewanee at the number four spot, as she collected a convincing win 7-6 (2), 6-2. 

At number five, freshman Mariella Congeni played a tight three-set match against Prat of Tennessee Wesleyan. Congeni picked up the first set 6-4 but lost the second set in a tiebreaker. She ultimately fell in a grind of the third set breaker, 12-14. Emma Caldwell played six for the Tigers and fell 6-2, 6-0.

Sewanee plays another exhibition match on February 11 against NAIA team, Cumberland University, on Sunday at 11 a.m. CT.
