No. 12 Men's Tennis Drops No. 40 Panthers to Secure Ninth SAA Regular Season Crown

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The University of the South men's tennis team had a top-10 regional showdown with Birmingham-Southern College, but it was the No. 12 Tigers that ended the No. 40 Panthers' nine-match winning streak thanks to a 8-1 score, Saturday from the Ann Dielen Tennis Complex. 

With the victory, the Purple and White secured its ninth Southern Athletic Association (SAA) regular season crown.

HOW IT HAPPENED
-Sewanee picked up two wins in double play. Gil Weston/Talman Ramsey (10-4) rolled the win at the No. 2, while Peyton Erck/Noah Holsclaw (11-1) won their sixth in a row with an 8-2 victory at the No. 3. 

-In singles, No. 8 Theron, the top-ranked singles player in the Atlantic South region, went toe-to-toe with BSC's Hallet Green. After falling in the first set, Theron forced a tiebreak with a 7-5 score in the second set. Playing a 10-point tiebreak for all the marbles, Theron (17-4) posted a 13-11 win to clinch the point. 

-Sewanee clinched the match at the No. 3 flight, as senior Holsclaw (13-4) defeated Ryan King in straight sets. 

-Wicklund (15-3) won his seventh straight match with a 6-1, 4-6, 6-2 victory at the No. 4. 

-Weston (16-4) and Ramsey (10-4) all earned victories in singles for Sewanee. 

NOT DONE YET
-For the University of the South on Saturday, the program snagged its ninth SAA Regular Season Championship. The Tigers are 57-1 in SAA regular season matches, including winning their last 34 in a row. 

-With the win, Sewanee will earn the No. 1 seed in the upcoming SAA Tournament, which is scheduled to begin on Friday, April 28 from the Champions Club in Chattanooga, Tenn.
