SEWANEE, Tenn. - The 21st-ranked University of the South men's tennis team dropped its season opener to a top-10 NAIA opponent in Tennessee Wesleyan, 8-1, Thursday afternoon from the Bruton-Guerry Tennis Center.

HOW IT HAPPENED
-In doubles,
Jackson Davis and
Matt Barnett posted an 8-4 victory at the No. 2 point, but it was the visitors who had the advantage in the match, winning two of the three points.
-Despite the Bulldogs claiming the No. 1 point,
Jack Metzger and
Alejandro Becker gave Jhoann Osorio/Maximillan Kendler a run for their money. The TWU duo, ranked the 11th-best doubles team in the National Athletic Intercollegiate Association (NAIA), edged the Sewanee team, 8-6.
-In singles, Barnett, Davis and
Liam Baer each took on ranked foes. At the No. 6 point, Baer forced a third set against No. 42 Mirko Dedich.
-Tennessee Wesleyan is ranked ninth in the preseason NAIA national rankings, according to the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA). The organization has not released preseason rankings for Division III. Sewanee ended the shortened 2020 campaign at 21st.
