Howell Equestrian Center

Home to Equestrian

Located on the campus of The University of the South, the Howell Equestrian Center has acted as a hub for Sewanee’s Nationally ranked Varsity Equestrian Program for over 26 years. Sewanee’s equestrian program is one of the few facilities in the country located a mere five-minute drive from central campus. The main barn, also known as the Howell Equestrian Center, was built in 2005 by many generous donors and equestrian alumni. It boasts state-of-the-art facilities, consisting of 32 12x12 stalls, two heated wash racks, four crossties, a laundry room, a heated tack room, and a heated viewing room. The space also encompasses a large indoor arena, the Dansby Arena, donated by the Dansby family. The arena is equipped with premier footing, a large jump storage space, and an automatic watering system.

The Howell Equestrian Center is also perched upon 93 acres of land. The property maintains 21 separate paddock spaces for premium equine turnout. Ten of those paddocks were recently renovated under the “Ava’s Meadow” project in 2023 and have provided grazing space to Sewanee’s many equine athletes. The spacious and meticulously maintained property hosts countless varsity equestrian competitions each year and continues to act as one of the nation’s top collegiate equestrian facilities.
