Volleyball Completes Reverse Sweep to Advance to SAA Semifinals

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The Sewanee volleyball team, for the third straight season, played a five-set battle in the quarterfinals of the 2019 Southern Athletic Association (SAA) Volleyball Tournament. The Tigers completed the reverse sweep over the Majors of Millsaps on Friday night inside Bill Battle Coliseum on the campus of Birmingham-Southern College.

-Despite Sewanee posting a .205 attack percentage in the opening set, Millsaps, the 5-seed in the tournament, overcame three straight set points to win 25-23.

-The Tigers struggled in the second set, as the team was out-attacked by the Majors, 12-8, en route to a 25-14 set victory and a 2-0 lead.

-With their backs against the wall, the Tigers had to win the rest of the way or be eliminated from the tournament. Tied a 16, the Tigers went on a 8-2 run to claim set point. Despite the Majors scoring four straight, the Tigers claimed the 25-22 set victory.

-Sewanee forced a fifth set with a 25-23 victory, as the Tigers had a lead of seven at one point in the set.

-In the deciding set, leading 9-8, the Tigers finished out the contest on a 6-2 run to win the set and complete the reverse sweep, 15-10.

-This is the third straight year that Sewanee has played a five-set match in the quarterfinals. After losing to Millsaps in the 2017 quarterfinal, the Purple and Gold have won the last two contests, against Rhodes in 2018 and Millsaps on Friday.

-Sewanee captured a 20-win season for the second straight year. It is the first time since the 1991 season that the Tigers have recorded back-to-back 20-win seasons.

-Destiny Stewart tied a season-high 19 kills on a .222 attack percentage and added 25 digs.

-Anna Ball led all Tigers with 26 digs, while Lilly Reilly posted 19 gids and 15 kills with only four errors committed.

-Sydney While added 14 digs, and Constance Connolly assisted on 53 of the team's 61 kills and dug out 12 Millsaps attacks.

-McKenzi Petricko led all attackers with 20 kills in the contest.

-Payton Passantino had 26 digs, while Morgan Vincent recorded a double-double with 17 digs and 14 kills.

The Tigers will next top-seed Birmingham-Southern in Bill Battle Coliseum Saturday at 6 p.m. in the semifinals.
