Volleyball Takes Down No. 24 Illinois Wesleyan; Takes Two of Three in Tourney

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - Sewanee volleyball recorded its first win over a nationally-ranked opponent as the Tigers defeated the Titans of Illinois Wesleyan in five sets as a part of the Holiday Inn Express Classic I, hosted by Illinois Wesleyan. The Tigers also claimed a victory over Millikin and dropped a contest with Otterbein.

HOW IT HAPPENED, OTTERBEIN
-The Tigers struggled out of the gate early in the match with Otterbein Friday afternoon in the first match of the weekend, posting a .079 attack percentage (7-4-38) in the first set.

-Sewanee had no answer for Otterbein for the match, who recorded an attack percentage of .354 and only committing eight errors in the straight-set victory.

-Otterbein is receiving votes in the latest American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) poll.

SEWANEE KEY STATISTICS
-Destiny Stewart and Lilly Reilly posted eight kills each, while Reilly added eight digs.

-Anna Ball and Constance Connoly added 24 and 12 digs, respectively.

OTTERBEIN KEY STATISTICS
-Julia Vermilion and Tate Eppard had 13 kills each to lead Otterbein.

HOW IT HAPPENED, ILLINOIS WESLEYAN
-in the nightcap on Friday, Sewanee battled the No. 24 team in Illinois Wesleyan. The teams battled to a five-set battle, the first for both teams in 2019.

-In the Tigers' win in the second and fourth sets, they posted a .237 (13-4-38) and .289 (16-5-38) attack percentages, respectively.

-Sewanee lead 6-3 early in the fifth set before IWU scored the next five points to reclaim the lead, 8-6.

-Trailing 10-7, the Tigers rallied for the next three points to even the score at 10 points each.

-Illinois Wesleyan had two opportunities to clinch the match, but they could not seal the deal. Leading 16-15, Sewanee saw them win the match point on an attack error.

-Illinois Wesleyan is ranked 24th in the nation, according to the coaches poll by the AVCA.

SEWANEE KEY STATISTICS
-Destiny Stewart led all attackers with 19 kills on a .286 attack percentage, committing just three errors in the five-set battle. The junior added 14 digs and scored 21.5 points.

-Sydney White also had a double-double with 22 digs and 15 kills.

-Lilly Reilly posted 10 kills and 18 digs, while Stephanie Price had 10 kills and a .562 hitting percentage.

-Constance Connolly had 47 assists and 12 digs.

ILLINOIS WESLEYAN KEY STATISTICS
-Grace Sanders and Jessica McCall had 16 kills each. Sanders had 22 digs, while McCall had 26.

-Amber Juarez added 24 digs for the Titans.

HOW IT HAPPENED, MILLIKIN
-In the final match of the weekend, the Tigers battled Millikin to a four-set victory. After falling 25-23 in the first set, Sewanee won the next three sets to seal the match.

-After recording a .045 attack percentage in the opening sets, the Tigers out-killed their opponent, 38-28.

SEWANEE KEY STATISTICS
-Lilly Reilly led Sewanee 16 digs and 13 kills, while Stephanie Price added 11 kills and two solo blocks.

-Destiny Stewart had a 20-dig, 10-kill performance to wrap up the weekend.

MILLIKIN KEY STATISTICS
-Marissa McElroy led Millikin with 17 kills.
