No. 14 Women’s Tennis Overcomes Doubles Deficit to Defeat Centre in SAA Opener

SEWANEE, Tenn. - The 14th-ranked Sewanee women's tennis team started off on the right foot in Southern Athletic Association play with a 6-3 victory over the Colonels of Centre College Saturday inside the Guerry Indoor Courts.

-The Tigers saw themselves down 2-1 after doubles play. Mary Jane McCaghren/Maura McCrary avoided the sweep with an 8-4 victory at the No. 2 flight.

-Catherine Owen/Ellie Czura fell to the 10th-ranked team in the Atlantic South region in Neha Rao/Hannah Doherty, 8-6.

-The Tigers bounced back in singles, but it took some time. Owen tied the match at two set wins apiece with a victory over regionally-ranked Katherine Sherman, 6-1-6-0. Sherman is ranked 20th in the region.

-After Sara Thompson gave Sewanee the lead at the No. 3 position, the Colonels' Rao defeated Czura, 7-6, 6-3, to even the match back at three.

-Mary Jane McCaghren's 6-2, 6-1 win in the No. 4 flight gave the Purple and Gold the lead, and the team secured the match with the No. 6 win by Maura McCrary.
