Women’s Lacrosse Overcomes First Half Deficit to Defeat Reigning MAC Freedom Champions

SEWANEE, Tenn. - The Sewanee women's lacrosse team used a 5-1 second half to defeat the four-time reigning Middle Athletic Conference Freedom Champions in Fairleigh Dickinson-Florham, 9-7 Monday afternoon inside Puett Field. The Devils also competed in last year's NCAA Tournament.

-With an even score at two goals apiece with 16:21 left in the opening half, Sewanee saw themselves down three goals in over a two-minute span. Caroline Pape scored two straight goals after winning the draw control.

-The Tigers cut it down to a one-goal deficit with 10:57 left in the opening half, but Pape struck again to put the Devils ahead 6-4 at the break.

-After each team scored a goal to start the second half, the Tigers went to work on offense. Trailing 7-5, the home team struck twice in almost a two-minute span. Sarah Strand evened the contest once again off an assist by Hattie Fogarty.

-Nearly 10 minutes later, Anna Comer went down the field and scored the go-ahead goal. After Logan Bulls scored with 8:52 to go, the Tigers defense limited the Devils to three shots.

-Sarah Strand recorded her fourth hat trick with four points, three goals and an assist. She also won four draw controls.

-Catherine Crigler scored twice for Sewanee, while Logan Bulls and Brooke Winfield also forced three turnovers.

-Brianna Young (4-2) saved 12 shots for the Tigers.

-Caroline Pape posted three goals, two assists and won six draw controls.

-Megan Nemeth (1-1) saved nine shots for the Devils in full time.

Sewanee returns to the field Wednesday against Ursinus at 3 p.m.
