SEWANEE, Tenn. (March 14, 2017) – In a game of offensive runs, the Sewanee women's lacrosse team earned an 11-6 win over visiting Gordon on a cold night at Puett Field.
The Tigers have now won three straight games and are 7-1 overall.
After Gordon scored the first three goals of the contest in the opening three minutes, Sewanee answered back with a run of its own. The Tigers scored seven straight times over the next 23 minutes. During that stretch, Molly Elkins and Catherine Crigler scored twice while Meredith Sackett, Anna Comer, and Preston Cooper each added one goal.
Gordon answered back over the final 30 seconds of the first half and during the first part of the second half. The Fighting Scots scored three straight unanswered goals to pull to within one, 7-6, with 12:35 to play.
Needing to respond, Sewanee did. Cooper added her second goal just over a minute later. That was followed with additional goals from Sackett, Brooke Winfield, and Elkins.
Overall, Sewanee finished with an advantage in groundballs and shots.
Individually, Elkins had a great night with three goals on three shots, two groundballs, and one caused turnover. Also, Crigler, Sackett, and Cooper all scored twice.
Additionally, Sackett finished with a game-high five groundballs while Hannah Bradley, Winfield, Comer, Grace Fulton, Hannah Tompkins, Elkins, Kit Sommi, and Brianna Young all finished with multiple GBs.
In goal, Young finished with seven saves in 60 minutes.
Olivia McCarrick Hannah Bourk, and Caroline Walton all scored twice for Gordon.
Sewanee returns to action with an 11:00 a.m. match against Susquehanna, Friday.
