Sewanee Edges Millsaps Late; Win in Mississippi for First Time Since 2010

JACKSON, Miss. - Sewanee women's basketball takes down Millsaps in a Southern Athletic Association (SAA) road contest Friday night inside the Hangar Dome, 77-72.

-Both teams competed in a see-saw battle for the majority of the game. Sewanee led by one, 37-36 at the break.

-Sewanee maintained the lead with a 19-14 third quarter, leading 56-50 headed into the fourth quarter.

-In the fourth quarter, the Majors used a 13-3 run to take the lead, 65-63, with 3:20 left in regulation.

-The teams would trade possessions until the 52-second mark. Tied at 71, Braxton Thomas of Millsaps netted one out of two free throws to put the Majors up 72-71.

-On the next possession, Allison Hitchcock drained a key three-pointer to put the lead back in favor of the good guys, 74-72, with 44 seconds left.

-Thanks to free throws by Bella Bombassi, the Tigers sealed the win over the Majors.

-The Sewanee women's basketball program snapped a six-game losing streak to Millsaps on the road, with their last win coming on Jan. 29, 2010, 92-80.

-It's the first win for the women's program against Millsaps in the SAA-era.

-Hannah McCormack inched closer to the 1,000-point mark in her career with a 25-point performance on 9-of-18 shooting and 7-of-8 from the free throw line. Going into Sunday's game at Birmingham-Southern, the senior is 18 points away from becoming the 15th Sewanee women's basketball player all-time to 1,000 career points. McCormack also added eight boards.

-Bella Taylor dropped 21 points on 8-of-16 shooting and 5-of-5 from the free throw line. The junior added eight rebounds and four assists.

-Allison Hitchcock drained 19 points to tie a career high for the sophomore.

-Dia Fortenberry led the Majors with 19 points, while Rebecca Harris added 13.

Sewanee will wrap up the weekend road trip with Birmingham-Southern. Tip is slated for 1 p.m. on Sunday afternoon.
