Slow Second Quarter Downs Women's Basketball in 2017-18 Opener

LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN, Ga. - The Sewanee women's basketball, after a stellar start, fell behind to the Scots of Covenant College thanks to an 11-1 run in the second stanza. Sewanee drops the 2017-18 opener, 59-50.

-Sewanee sprinted out to a 9-2 lead in the first 3:22 of the contest, eventually outscoring the Scots, 21-14 in the opening frame.

-However, it was all Covenant in the second quarter, outscoring the Tigers, 11-1, in the quarter to take a 25-22 lead into the locker room.

-While the Tigers took 14 shots in the quarter, the Scots only shot 35.7 percent (5-for-14) from the field themselves.

-The Purple and Gold were able to rally in the third period thanks to second-chance shooting. The Tigers pulled six offensive rebounds and outrebounded the Scots, 12-7 in the quarter. Each team scored 15 points each in the third, so the Tigers still trailed by three, 40-37, headed into the final period.

-Sewanee would tie the contest at 40 on a three-pointer by Kelley Myers. After a missed jump shot by the Scots, the Tigers had the ball, but not for long. The Scots stole it away, and after a missed three-pointer Clara Dirkse Wolfe grabbed the offensive board and made the putback with 9:20 left in regulation.

-After a three-pointer by Allison Hitchcock with 8:35 left to give the Tigers the 43-42 advantage, the next bucket came at the 6:28 mark thanks to two Covenant free throws to retake the lead, 44-43. The Scots would not look back from there, finishing the contest on a 15-7 run to seal the victory.

-This is the first game for new women's basketball head coach Tracey Braden.

-Hannah McCormack and Bella Taylor each led the Tigers with 17 points and six rebounds.

-Taylor added three steals and a block.

-Allison Hitchcock recorded a double-double, scoring 12 points and grabbing 10 boards.

-Sue Kim played all 40 minutes and contributed six assists and three steals.

-As a team, the Tigers turned the ball over 13 times and forced 16 Covenant turnovers.

-Bekah Walter played 32 minutes off the bench and dropped 18 points to lead all scorers.

-Jessica Bell added 15 points and eight boards, while Joanna Smith scored 10 points.

The Tigers will continue its opening four-game road swing this weekend with the Lee's Famous Recipe/Hampton Inn Classic, hosted by Centre in Danville, Ky. Sewanee will open the weekend with Maryville on Friday night.
