Joe Sponsel enters his second season as an assistant with the cross country and track and field programs at Sewanee.
Before coming to the Domain, Sponsel recently served a second stint as an assistant coach at his alma mater, Southwestern University in Georgetown, Texas. He assisted with the program with one-on-one instruction of student-athletes competing in distance, steeplechase and hurdles. While managing prospective student-athletes, he also managed the social media accounts of the program.
Prior to his return to Georgetown, Sponsel spent the 2016 and 2017 seasons at California State University, Fullerton, where he served as a graduate assistant coach. During his time with the Titans, he worked with the distance and steeplechase student-athletes, assisted with recruiting and designed programs and workouts.
Before working in California, Sponsel served as an assistant coach with Southwestern for the 2015 season.
During his undergraduate career at Southwestern, Sponsel played soccer for three seasons, ran track for two seasons, and ran cross country for one year during his time with the Pirates. While with the track and field team, Sponsel earned All-Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) honors in the 110-meter hurdles, 400-meter hurdles and the 3,000-meter steeplechase.
Sponsel earned a Master's Degree in Kinesiology with a focus in Sports Psychology from CSU Fullerton in 2017. He also obtained a Bachelor's of Arts in Psychology with a minor in Exercise and Sports Studies from Southwestern in 2014.
