Shackelford Named Coach of the Year, Gray Highlights All-SAA Men’s Tennis Accolades

ATLANTA - Announced by the Southern Athletic Association on Friday, the Sewanee men's tennis program, led by Jack Gray and John Shackelford, saw six student-athletes earn All-SAA recognition.

Shackelford earns his second Coach of the Year honor since the SAA was established in 2012-13. He led the program to a 22-5 mark, matching the team's win total from a year ago, en route to their sixth straight SAA Men's Tennis Tournament Championship. In 32 years at the University of the South, he earned his 550th career win against Rhodes on April 21 in the SAA Tournament Semifinals.

Joining Gray on the First Team is Andres Carro, while Ryan Olps and Jordan Brewer were named to the Second Team. Alejandro Becker and Jack Metzger earned an Honorable Mention nod.

A two-time All-SAA First Team member and a 2016 Newcomer of the Year recipient, Gray recorded a 12-5 singles record. The Chattanooga, Tenn. native went 4-2 against ranked opponents and 8-3 against regionally-ranked opponents. In doubles play, the junior tallied a 15-10 record, 14-9 at the No. 1 position.

Carro finished as a co-leader in singles wins with 13 with a 13-6 mark. In doubles action, the sophomore recorded a 13-8 record. The Memphis, Tenn. native earns his first All-SAA First Team selection and his second All-Conference selection in as many years.

Olps finished his freshman campaign with a 12-9 singles record, splitting time at the No. 2 and No. 3 flights. In doubles, the Sugar Hill, Ga. native tallied a 10-7 mark.

Brewer, like Carro, finished the regular season with 13 wins. The McKinney, Texas native recorded a 15-7 mark in doubles as he earns his second All-Conference selection in as many years.

Becker earns his first All-SAA selection with a 16-6 doubles record and a 10-4 singles mark. Of his 16 doubles wins, the Mexico City, Mexico native recorded 10 at the No. 1 flight.

Metzger earns an All-SAA selection in his first year with the program, recording a 17-7 doubles record, 12-6 at the No. 3 position. The Duluth, Ga. native also racked up a 9-4 singles record.
