SEWANEE, Tenn. (Sept. 30, 2016) – The Sewanee men's tennis team opened the annual ITA Atlantic South Regional Friday with a number of wins.
Playing on their home courts, the Tigers still have multiple players alive in both the Main Singles and Main Doubles draws.
In singles action, Hayden Loeb opened play with a 6-4, 6-0 win against Judd Motz of Oglethorpe. Lower in the bracket, Jordan Brewer quickly won his first match with a perfect 6-0, 6-0 victory against John Dangerfield of Piedmont. In the next round, Brewer continued to play well with a 6-4, 6-3 straight set win over Davis Plummer of Millsaps.
Also advancing in the Main Singles draw on Friday were Andres Carro and Avery Schober. Carro first defeated seeded Sebastian Sikh of N.C. Wesleyan 7-5, 7-6 (8-6) and then went on and topped Rene Romos of Belhaven in straight sets (6-1, 6-3). Schober, who is seeded second in the bracket, dominated his opening match with a 6-1, 6-2 victory against Brandon Gita of OU. Schober then rolled past Sean Hogan of Rhodes 6-1, 6-2.
In the Main Doubles bracket, three Tiger teams earned a trip to the Round of 16. First Brewer and Aubrey Davis defeated Kerkoc and Soler of Belhaven 8-4. Jack Gray and Loeb then defeated Bruff and Pearson of Guilford 8-2 while the Sewanee team of Carro and Schober routed Richardson and Magee of OU, 8-1.
Additionally, Mac McCullough had a pair of straight set wins in singles and is scheduled to play Jacob Grace of Methodist in the semifinals on Saturday. Dane Hawthorne is also in the semifinals in his bracket after he dropped only one set in two matches.
