Men’s Golf Earns Sixth Place Finish at Rhodes Fall Classic

TUNICA, Miss. - The Sewanee men's golf team was the top Southern Athletic Association team represented at the Rhodes Fall Classic held at Tunica National on Sunday and Monday, as the Tigers finished in sixth out of 20 total teams with an 891 score.

TOP PERFORMANCES
-Tommy Oliver slid up seven spots from the second round to finish in the top-10 at ninth with a 215 score. After firing a 76 on the par 72, the senior fired under-par scores on the next 36 holes, scoring a two-under, 70 in the second round and a three-under, 69 in the final round.

-The Sewanee, Tenn. native recorded an even-par average on par 4s, and he finished with 37 pars out of the 54 allotted, good for fifth-best in the tournament.

-Zack Russell scored a 226 (74-76-76) to finish in a tie for 37th place, while Michael Olmsted finished the three-round event with a 231 (79-77-75).

-Gray Matthews, who carded a 236 (70-84-82) in the event, posted two eagles at the event, on hole 14 in the opening round and on hole seven in the second round. Both holes were par 5s. His two eagles were third-best at the 54-hole event, one better than medalist honor Drew Mathers of Huntingdon and Cameron Starr of LaGrange.

-Woodson Smith rounded out the Sewanee scoring by firing a 237 (88-74-75).

TOURNAMENT NOTES
-Huntingdon College, ranked third in the preseason coaches poll, won the event for the second straight year with an 846. The Hawks, who improved the team score in each round over the weekend, finished in second at the 2019 NCAA Division III National Championships.

-Huntingdon's Drew Mathers posted a -14, 202 (65-70-67) for the tournament, three strokes ahead of Christian Early's 205 from Denison.
