SEWANEE, Tenn. - Sophomore golfer Zack Russell has been named Tiger of the Week after his performance on the links at the Southern Athletic Association Preview at the GreyStone Golf Club in Dickson, Tenn.
Russell took home medalist honors with a 139 score. In the first round, the sophomore chipped in three birdies on holes seven, nine and 11, but from hole 13 to 17, he birdied each hole to finish with an eight-under, 64.
In the final round, after struggling on the first 10 holes, the Charlottesville, Va. native had back-to-back birdies on 16 and 17 to hold off Joseph Keene of Rhodes and Blake Farbman of Berry to win the event.
For the tournament, Russell averaged 2.88 on Par 3s, 3.95 on Par 4s and 4.63 on Par 5s. He finished with 11 birdies, second-most in the field.
With his work, he helped lead his team to victory in the Preview, firing a 570. The Tigers beat out No. 11 Oglethorpe, No. 20 Berry and No. 23 Rhodes. Rankings are from the Golf Coaches Association of America Division III national poll.
Russell and the rest of the Tigers return to the links Sept. 22-23 with the Rhodes Fall Collegiate Golf Classic from Tunica National.
