Thomas Sinks 1,000th Point; Men’s Basketball Erases Losing Skid in Overtime at Birmingham-Southern

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The Sewanee men's basketball team saw its four-game losing streak come to an end on Sunday in the Bill Battle Coliseum, as the Tigers defeated the Panthers of Birmingham-Southern in a Southern Athletic Association (SAA) contest, 88-85. Additionally, to ice the game away, senior forward Adrian Thomas eclipsed the 1,000-point milestone with 3.1 seconds left in overtime.

-The contest saw nine lead changes and seven ties in the first 20 minutes of the game. Tied at nine at the 16:41 mark, Sewanee went on a 9-2 run in almost four minutes to earn its biggest lead of the contest at nine points, 18-11.

-BSC carried a 35-33 lead with 2:24 left in the half, but the Tigers were able to push the lead back in their favor thanks to a three-point play by Adrian Thomas and a triple from the corner by Michael Barry to lead 39-35 at intermission.

-In the first 20 minutes, Sewanee shot 50% (13-of-26) from the field in the first, including a 6-of-11 mark from downtown.

-The Panthers opened the second half with a 9-2 run in the first three minutes of the half to lead 46-41, but the Tigers roar back to cut the deficit to one point, 51-50, at the under-16 media timeout.

-Coming out of the break, the Tigers made back-to-back layups by Thomas and Joey Knox to lead 54-51 before BSC took a timeout with 13:01 left in the contest.

-BSC evened the contest at 72 points each with 2:09 left in regulation on two free throws by Ben Spence. However, with 1:12 left in regulation, Adrian Thomas sealed a three-point field goal to give Sewanee the 75-72 advantage.

-However, the Panthers sank three of four free throws in the final minute to force the game into overtime.

-Leading 80-79 with 2:47 left in the extra period, the Tigers sealed the contest on a 7-2 run. The Tigers drained 6-of-8 from the charity stripe.

-With 3.1 seconds left in overtime, Adrian Thomas sunk his 1,000th career point at the charity stripe. The Chattanooga, Tenn. native is now the 27th player in Men's Basketball history to surpass the feat. Watch below to see the milestone.

-Adrian Thomas scored 15 of his 20 points in the second half and overtime, finishing the game 7-of-14 shooting. Additionally, the senior corralled seven rebounds and dished out five assists.

-Jordan Warlick, thanks to a 12-point performance in the first half, finished with 18, including draining 7-of-9 from the free throw line.

-Joey Knox also contributed 18 points, while Ryan Starr posted 11 points, eight boards and five dimes.

-Ben Spence led BSC with 21 points and added 10 boards.

-Christian Stewart added 20 for the Panthers in the loss.

Sewanee will return to the friendly confines of Juhan Gymnasium for the first time in 2020 with an SAA contest against Oglethorpe on Friday. Tip is scheduled for 8 p.m., following the women's game.
