#SeniorStatus: Hunter Buescher has made some noise in his first two games of his senior campaign. After being named the Southern Athletic Association's Player of the Week, Buescher scored 25 points, including the game-winning 3-pointer in Sewanee's 65-63 win over Huntingdon on Nov. 9.
After scoring 21 points against Piedmont on Nov. 13, the San Antonio, Texas native is shooting 51.6 percent (16-of-31) from the floor and is 6-of-13 from beyond the arc. He is averaging 23 points per game.
NATION BEST: The Tigers finished the 2017-18 season with the nation's best defensive three-point shooting. The team finished with a 27.5 percent mark, and they averaged 5.9 treys per game.
So far in 2018-19, the Tigers have picked this up where they left off, as the team has allowed 17.9 percent (5-of-28) 3-point field goals, ranked 15th in all of NCAA Division III.
SHARING THE ROCK: 32 of Sewanee's 48 field goals have an assist attached to it. Hunter Buescher leads the team with nine as seven different players have contributed an assist this season.
STEP UP WARLICK: Earning his first start in his Sewanee career against Piedmont, Jordan Warlick has made some heads turn early in the 2018-19 season.
After a 15-point, seven-rebound and four-assist night against Huntingdon on Nov. 9, the Irmo, S.C. native dropped 10 points in 33 minutes against the Lions. In two games, the freshman transfer is 8-of-16 from the field and 5-of-10 from downtown.
A LOOK AT THE ROYALS: Johnson will enter the Lon Varnell Classic with a 2-4 record overall, collecting wins over Asbury (Ky.) and Bob Jones (N.C.).
In six games, the Royals are averaging 93 points a game, led by Coby Jones, who is averaging 20.2 points per game. Jones also is the lead rebounder with 6.83 boards per game.
Sewanee will face Johnson for the first time since 2016 when the teams squared off twice: once at home in the Lon Varnell Classic and on the road in Knoxville. In the eighth meeting all-time between the two institutions, Sewanee will look to remain unbeaten, posting a 7-0 record.
A LOOK AT THE TORNADOS: Brevard is entering its second year of reclassification from NCAA Division II to III. Competing in the USA South, the Tornados recorded a 4-18 record, posting wins against Berea twice (once in overtime), Maryville, and N.C. Wesleyan.
Levi Lamb returns for his junior season as the returning leading scorer, posting 11.9 points per game. Joining Cannon Lamb (no relation) as the lead rebounders for the 2017-18 season with 3.5 boards per game, the team averaged 71.5 points per game a year ago.
This will be the first meeting between the two schools in program history. Sewanee is 10-13 all-time against schools from North Carolina.
