Men’s Basketball Cruises to 80-63 Win over Birmingham-Southern, Improve to 3-0 in SAA Play

SEWANEE, Tenn. - The Sewanee men's basketball team improve to 3-0 in Southern Athletic Association (SAA) play and 6-6 overall with an 80-63 victory over Birmingham-Southern Sunday afternoon inside Juhan Gymnasium.

-The story was the three-point shooting for the Tigers, but it took some time to get going for the home team, only leading 10-9 with 12:58 left in the opening half.

-The Tigers responded with a 10-1 run in about a two-minute span before BSC broke the run with a three-pointer with 10:18 left in the period, but Sewanee led 20-13.

-Despite the made shot by the visitors, the Purple and Gold kept the foot on the gas pedal, sprinting out to a 13-3 run to lead 33-16 late in the first half.

-Thanks to a 17-of-30 (56.7 percent) performance from the field, including 9-of-15 from downtown, the Tigers led 44-27 at the break.

-Despite each team scoring 36 points in the second half, the Tigers cruised to a 17-point win over the Panthers.

-Sewanee breaks a five-game personal losing streak to Birmingham-Southern, with their last win coming at Juhan Gymnasium on Jan. 11, 2015, defeating the Panthers, 77-65.

-Sewanee drained 15 shots from beyond the arc, the most the season surpassing 11 in the opener against Emory & Henry. The Tigers finished the game 15-of-30 from three-point land, good for 50 percent, the highest mark this season.

-The 15 field goals from downtown is the most in a game since Jan. 25, 2014, when Sewanee dropped 15 three-pointers at Oglethorpe. The team also had 15 made three-pointers in an exhibition contest at Austin Peay on Nov. 4, 2016.

-Luke Smith led all scorers with 23 points on 9-of-12 shooting, 5-of-7 from beyond the arc. The freshman also dished out seven rebounds and seven dimes each.

-Hunter Buescher scored 15 points on 6-of-12 shooting, 3-of-6 from downtown.

-Adrian Thomas earned his second double-double of the season, scoring 14 on 6-of-12 shooting and collecting 11 boards. The sophomore also had five assists and three steals.

-Cole DenBesten scored 16 points off the bench for the Panthers, while Harrison Deneka dropped 14 points.

Sewanee will conclude non-conference play Tuesday night with a trip to Boyce (Ky.). Tip is slated for 4 p.m.
