DANVILLE, Ky. (Feb. 22, 2013) – A late second-half run lifted Oglethorpe past the Sewanee men's basketball team, 59-53, Friday during quarterfinal action of the Southern Athletic Association (SAA) Men's Basketball Tournament at Centre College.
With the loss, Sewanee finished the season with a 17-9 overall record. In fact, that record is the program's best since the 1997-98 team finished 20-6.
In the first half, Sewanee took a one-point halftime lead, 30-29, despite making only 35.3 percent of its attempts. The big key early in the game was the Tigers' ability to make six three-point attempts to Oglethorpe's three.
In the second half, the Stormy Petrels scored the first six points to take a five-point lead, 35-30, with less than a minute off the clock.
From there, both teams continued to trade scores until Sewanee went on a mini scoring run at the 15:05 mark.
Eventually, OU retook the lead when Drew Patrick hit a jumper with 7:13 to play.
Down the stretch, the Stormy Petrels made 60 percent of their attempts to take an eight point lead, 58-50, with just under two minutes remaining.
Despite a late run by Sewanee, OU was able to hang on for the win.
Individually, senior Tyler Brown led the Tigers with a 12-point, 13-rebound double-double. Bryant was the only other Tiger in double figures with 11 points.
Guard Alex Davis led Oglethorpe with a game-high 14 points.
Friday's game marked the final contest for seniors Bouldin, Brown, and Lewis Affronti.
