Sewanee falls just short at Rhodes

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (Feb. 15, 2013) – Despite a valiant effort, the Sewanee men's basketball team fell at Southern Athletic Association (SAA) rival Rhodes, 66-58, Friday.

With the loss, Sewanee fell to 16-8 overall and 7-6 in league play. Additionally, the Tigers' eight-game winning streak was snapped.

Despite an early 9-4 run to start the game, Sewanee could not hold its lead. After the brief spurt by Sewanee, Rhodes rallied with a 7-0 run.

As play moved deeper, things stayed close. Neither team led by more than five points until 13:29 left in the second half.

After Rhodes stretched its lead to seven, 39-32, Sewanee responded with a layups by freshman Nilan Hodge and sophomore Robert Veal.

With 4:24 to play, Sewanee briefly tied the score, 48-48, when freshman Seth Brown hit a layup.

After a timeout by Rhodes, the Tigers took their first lead of the second half when junior Valentino Bryant hit a close jumper with 3:52 left.

Unfortunately, down the stretch, Rhodes' offense came alive. The Lynx scored the next eight points, which pushed Rhodes ahead by six, 56-50, with 1:49 to play.

From there, Sewanee kept fighting hard. However, Rhodes hit 7-of-8 free throws the final two minutes to seal the win.

Individually, Bryant led all scores with a game-high 20 points. Additionally, senior Lewis Affronti added 12 points.

Forward Theo Hartwell led Rhodes with 19 points.

The Tigers will close out their 2012-13 regular season at Hendrix, Sunday. Tip-off is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
