Simpson Nabs First Win at Sewanee; Defeats Southern Virginia, 7-0

SEWANEE, Tenn. - The Sewanee field hockey team earned its first win in the 2019 season with a 7-0 shutout of the Southern Virginia Knights Friday evening from Puett Field.

-Sewanee scored three goals in the first 10 minutes of the contest. In the fourth minute, Buckley Norman found the pass from Ceara Caffrey.

-In the seventh minute, after Caroline Sugar took the penalty corner, she positioned herself to score the Tigers' second goal of the game.

-In the 10th minute, also off a corner, Sugar passed to Anne Cleveland who found Ceara Caffrey to extend the lead to 3-0.

-In the second quarter, Sewanee scored on a Caffrey unassisted goal (26') and a penalty stroke goal by Sugar (27').

-Sewanee added two goals in the third by Alex Hornsby (37') and Caffrey's third of the game in the 38th minute.

-This is the first win for Sewanee head coach Steve Simpson in his first year with the program. He has tabbed six wins in his year-plus of head coaching experience.

-Caroline Sugar had two goals on the night on four total shots. The sophomore also added an assist as a part of the penalty corner double assist.

-Ceara Caffrey had a hat trick on nine total shots, four on goal.

-Buckley Norman and Alex Hornsby each added a goal for Sewanee.

-For the contest, Sewanee took 39 shots while allowing the visitors to enter the offensive circle twice.

-Kyla Nase (0-4) saved 12 shots in full time for the first-year hockey program.

The series finale between the two schools will take place Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m. on campus.
