Petrels Rally Late to Down Tigers in Series Opener

ATLANTA - Leading 7-4 headed into the bottom of the ninth, the Sewanee baseball team was unable to hold the lead, as Oglethorpe rallied for a four-run ninth inning to defeat the Tigers, 8-7, Friday night.

-Oglethorpe started the contest with a run in the bottom half of the first inning on an RBI single.

-The Tigers got on the board in a loud way in the sixth with three home runs. Derek Hullings launched a homer to even the score at one run apiece.

-After a Riley Brandvold walk, Jared Demkowicz gave the Tigers the lead with a two-run dinger to make it 3-1 in favor of the visitors.

-Following a groundout, Trey Akins went down the left field line with a solo shot for the third homer of the inning and a 4-1 lead.

-The Tigers added an insurance run in the seventh. After a double play, Hullings contributed his second RBI of the contest with a single to right center. Scoring on the play was Jake Woolard, who reached base on an error.

-The Petrels added three runs in the bottom of the seventh with an RBI double and a two-run RBI single to cut the Tiger lead to 5-4.

-After a scoreless eighth, the Purple and Gold added two key add-on runs in the top half of the ninth. With Jack Galanek leading off the frame with a walk, he advanced to second on a wild pitch.

-Jake Woolard reached next on a bunt single to put runners on the corners.

-After a strikeout, Galanek would later score on a fielder's choice by Hullings to make it 6-4.

-After wild pitch to put runners on second and third and a strikeout, Demokowicz coaxed a walk off the OU reliever.

-The next batter, Chris McNulty, brought the seventh run home on a bases loaded walk.

-The Tigers, ahead 7-4, got the first out on a strikeout, but the lead would be short lived in the next three plate appearances. A walk, a double and a two-run homer to even the score again at seven runs apiece.

-After a flyout for the second out and the bases clean, the visitors were one out away from securing the win, but back-to-back singles and a walk loaded the bases. With the winning run 90 feet away, a wild pitch by Addison Jones allowed Connor Crooke, who started the second rally of the frame with a single, scored on the play to secure the win.

-Jared Demkowicz (3), Trey Akins (1) and Derek Hullings (1) all launched homers for the Tigers in the road matchup.

-Akins and Hullings each tallied two hits, with Hullings adding three RBI.

-Demkowicz also added two RBI on offense.

-Drew Mancuso started for the Tigers on the mound, allowing 10 hits and four earned in 6.1 innings pitched, fanning eight batters.

-Lucas DeSantis (0-2) suffered the loss, allowing four earned in one inning plus seven batters.

-Andrew Mink went 4-for-5 with a homer and three RBI.

-Noah Cole started for OU, allowing four earned on five hits and three walks in five innings.

-Dylan Childress (4-1) earned the win, pitching the eighth and ninth for the Petrels, allowing one earned run on two hits, while striking out four.

Saturday's doubleheader with the Petrels has been pushed up to a 1 p.m ET / 12 p.m. CT start due to the threat of rain.
