SEWANEE, Tenn. (Sept. 2, 2015) – An overtime-breakaway goal by Carrie Anderson off a great crossing pass from Monica Bueso lifted the Sewanee field hockey team to a 1-0 season-opening victory over rival Washington & Lee, Thursday, at Puett Field.
The Tigers are 1-0 to start the season while W&L, who has lost both 1-0 decision in OT, dropped to 0-2.
A fast-paced match, both teams had a number of chances throughout. W&L finished with 20 shots and 12 corners while the Tigers had seven attempts and four corners.
After neither team could find the back of the cage in regulation, Sewanee responded with a breakaway midway through the extra period. A long pass to Bueso was dribbled in and then fed across past the diving W&L keeper. Anderson then tapped in the assist for the game-winner.
On defense, Katya Waters finished with eight saves in goal. Anderson led Sewanee with three shots while Hannah Tompkins finished with two attempts.
Sewanee returns to action with an 11:00 a.m. match, Sunday against Wittenberg.
