Box Score SEWANEE, Tenn. (Oct. 31, 2015) – Two second-half goals led the Sewanee field hockey team to a 2-1 win over visiting NCAA Division II member Newberry, Saturday, at Puett Field.
The Tigers end their regular season with an 11-5 record, which includes wins the past two contests.
After honoring seniors Emma Horgan, Janie Spilman, Kya Wence, and Kate Roe, the Tigers and Wolves traded possessions for the majority of the first half. Sewanee led in shots in the opening 35 minutes by a 5-4 advantage.
With the score at 0-0 to start the second half, Sewanee finally broke through when Virginia Barry picked up a pass sent in by Katie Wilson and blasted her shot into the cage in the 38th minute.
After another Barry goal was disallowed, Sewanee added to its advantage 10 minutes later. This time, Kat Mulligan tapped in a pass from Carrie Anderson, which gave Sewanee a 2-0 lead.
Newberry added its lone score in the 66th minute as Caitlyn Warren scored from Meghan Smiga.
Overall, Sewanee led in shots 12-9. Newberry had a slight 6-4 advantage in corners.
Individually, Sewanee keepers Katya Waters and Caroline Brennan both finished with two saves.
