Baseball team crushes Rust for a pair of wins

SEWANEE, Tenn. (April 10, 2014) – Backed by its biggest offensive output of the season, the Sewanee baseball team earned a pair of wins over Rust, Thursday, at Montgomery Field.

The Tigers won 25-2 in the opener and then took the second game 10-1.

In game one Sewanee finished with 24 hits, five doubles, one triple and a homerun to go along with a season-high 24 RBI.

Jack Whaley led the way with a 5-for-5 effort, four RBI, and four runs scored. First baseman Zack Sutton also played well after going 4-of-5 with four runs scored, four RBI, and his second career homerun.

Overall Michael Walker, Nate Barnett, Nathan Warren, and Grant Goodson finished with multiple hits.

On the mound winning pitcher Marshall Ussery along with Jared Davenport, Kevin Wisner, and Luke Peglau allowed only two runs and five hits while striking out three.

In the nightcap, Sewanee again started strong. The Tigers scored four runs in the first inning and three in the second and third innings.

Leadoff hitter Jackson Cooper led the Tigers with two hits and a run. Whaley also scored three runs and added an RBI while Walker and Ben Clune each drove in two.

Additionally, Chris Erdmier had one RBI as did Sutton, Goodson, and Warren.

Charlie Morrow earned his first win this season after striking out three in 2.0 innings of work. Alex Mockett, Adam Schmidt, and Ben Harrison also pitched well, after allowing only one run on three hits while stirking out three.

With its non-conference schedule completed, Sewanee returns to SAA play for a three-game series at 2013 NCAA Division III College World Series participant Millsasp this weekend.
