Box Score LEXINGTON, Va. (Oct. 20, 2013) – The Sewanee field hockey team opened its two-match fall break road trip with a 3-1 victory over Randolph-Macon on the campus of Washington & Lee University in Lexington, Va.
The victory improved the Tigers to 7-3 overall while Randolph-Macon fell to 8-7.
Sewanee opened the scoring as freshman Carrie Anderson lifted a shot over Randolph-Macon goalkeeper Steph Talley.
Four minutes later, the Tigers expended their lead when Janie Spilman found freshman Kat Mulligan on a break away in the 14th minute.
In the second half, senior Mary Kate McAlister scored off a corner pass from Tilden Davis.
Randolph-Macon would finally get on the scoreboard, as MacKenzie Turner picked up a loose ball inside the circle and pushed her shot in.
Overall, Randolph-Macon outshot the Tigers 22-10. However, Sewanee freshman goalkeeper Gabrielle Fignar made a 10 saves.
On offense, Anderson finished with three shots while McAlister, Emma Horgan, and Maggie Boozer added two attempts each.
The Tigers will continue their road trip with a 5:00 p.m. match against W&L, Monday.
